AURORA

"Aurora means, as you all know, new beginnings, new dawns and birth,

so it seemed an obvious name for my new venture.

It also represents colour and life as seen in the aurora borealis – and I hope you think I have managed to capture some of that light and colour in my collection."

INSPIRATION

Nicola Launches the Aurora Collection

This is all about thank you's! Nearly a year ago today I sat down for my birthday lunch with a few of my closest friends and - after a few (well quite a few actually!) glasses of bubbles – we each vowed to do one thing within 12 months, mine was to found a jewellery business. So my first thank you is to Lisa, Jo, Jenny, Liz and Sue for giving me enough fizz to and courage to commit.

Once the bubbles' magic had worn off, in somewhat of a panic I sought out Jason (Holt) – and over lunch (and just one glass of bubbles) at the Bleeding Heart I asked him whether it was remotely possible to execute my vow. To my surprise he said it was.

He introduced me to Alicja who gave me some quick training on design, Mandos as my assigned goldsmith and to those I now know as my Holts family who guided me through this year and helped me in ways too numerous to list.

And it is of course in Holts' lovely shop we were able to celebrate the launch of Edith & Kiveen, a jewellery house named after my two grandmothers.

It was very nearly called "random and rubover" as apparently those are the two phrases I use most when designing pieces. As well as loving asymmetry, random pairings and colour I am obsessed with comfort which is why I use so many rubover settings - no snagging.

So huge thanks to Alicja for her patience, to Mandos who made my designs look as magic as they do tonight and of course to Jason, Mr and Mrs Holt and all my Holts family.

Thank you to my own family too for believing I could do it, my wonderful husband for his unfailing support and for being such a dapper wine waiter, to Edith and Kiveen for being such wonderful grandmothers, in their own distinctive ways and finally and most of all to all of you for being here this evening.

Aurora means, as you all know, new beginnings, new dawns and birth so it seemed an obvious name for my new venture. It also represents colour and life as seen in the aurora borealis – and I hope you think I have managed to capture some of that light and colour in my collection.

The names of my pieces have been inspired in large part by the Aurora, stars and nature. To give you just one example, "Angel's Rock" is so named because the main stone is labradorite, which is found in northern Canada.  The Inuit myth is that the source of its iridescence is the aurora itself because one of the stars in the aurora once crashed into the rocks leaving behind its magic and sparkle! Another explanation, equally magical, is that an angel clipped her wing on the rocks once when flying overhead.
